21st Century Wonderland. Media Meditation #3

Hello! I thought it would be a good idea to post something that coordinated with my blog name: "Sierra In Wonderland." You may, or may not have caught on to why I selected that name. For those of you who are wondering, I chose it because I am huge fan of the Alice in Wonderland story. When I heard about a new Alice and Wonderland movie coming out, with Johnny Depp as the mad-hatter I was ecstatic. Here is a preview of the film that will come to a theatre near you on March 5th 2010.

Like all movie trailers, this one fits into my Electronic Media & Writing Class. The trailer relates to the Eight Shifts, Technological, Personal and Aesthetic Shift. - We can watch the trailer on our Smartphones, Laptops and we can post the video on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and our personal blogs. The trailer also relates to the Seven Principles. Production: camera angles, lighting, editing, sound effects, colors, font styles and symbols all make this movie trailer unique to it's creepy, entertaining world that is Wonderland. In addition to the Eight Shifts and Seven Principles the movie trailer also relates to the Persuasive Techniques we learned about in class. Humor: The jokes we remember from the first film and the new jokes in the trailer. Nostalgia: brings back memories from my childhood of watching the original Alice. Beautiful People: Well, Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway may not look there normal selves in this movie (they get into character beautifully) they still are known as gorgeous celebrities. Timing: The story builds up from beginning to end (only a preview) in the trailer.

I honestly can't watch a movie, preview, commercial or news story the same again. I am always looking for how many scenes are in each commercial or thinking about relating it to the persuasive techniques, etc. I will never look at media the same way again!!!

Thanks for reading,
S.

I Stopped scripting at 1 minute.

This particular news story relates to a lot of things that my classmates and I learned about in Hilliard's textbook (so far). In addition to relating this news story to my assigned reading, I noticed a number of comparisons and differences when it comes to a news story and a commercial. Those three observations include: First thing I noticed was the reporter said "um," and "uh" a couple of times during her sentences. You would not see that in a commercial unless it was supposed to be there. When someone watches a news story and the reporter says "um" "uh" we the viewer know that it wasn't in her script. The second thing I noticed was the reporter included the who, what, where, and why in the lead of the story. My third observation is the running time of a news story. Most news stories run between 30-90 seconds, while commercial typically only last for 30 seconds.

I hope you enjoyed reading my post as much as I enjoyed scripting the McQueen news story. Until next time!

R.I.P. Mr. McQueen, you were a very talented man.

America's guilty pleasure. Media Meditation #2

Fox's American Idol isn't a new craze to millions of Americans, but it's new to me. A couple weeks ago I was flipping through the channels and landed on American Idol's premiere episode. I was intrigued to see what it was all about, and it had been years since I briefly saw one or two episodes of season 1. (They are now on Season 9) Now I am as guilty as the other million americans! I was instantly hooked just by watching some very talented signers like ...

Idol's Andrew Garcia:

and... Didi Benami

Both auditions are very pleasing to the limbic part of the brain. (yes, the part of the brain that processes music!) And, the first video, the promo features a lot of media education language that I learned about in my Electronic Media & Writing class with Professor Williams. Those include, symbols: the picture of America in back of the singers who are auditioning. Humor: Bad singers, and Ellen's comment "I'm the next American Idol!.... JUDGE!" Plain Folks: Ordinary girls & guys auditioning for the big title - American Idol. Rhetorical question: "What's new this American Idol season?" Repetition: American Idol, American Idol, American Idol, you get what I'm saying. Beautiful people: Celebrity guest judges of course. And, Group Dynamics: "Everybody is asking the same question."

American Idol is on every Tuesday and Thursday, and occasionally it is on Wednesdays too! It's on now! Are you watching?

Glitter in the Air. Media Meditation #1

Every year I can't wait for the Grammy's. I am a huge fan of music, and after-all the Grammy's is music's biggest night!

Every year you have an idea of who will perform that evening, but it's always a big surprise. This year I was completely blown away by the Stars performances, especially Pink's performance. I have never been a huge fan of Pink, but I was excited to see what she would do on stage, because it had been a long time since I saw her in the spotlight. To my surprise Pink's performance was my favorite! It was so visually beautiful! When she first came on stage I wasn't expecting anything amazing, but, after two minutes Pink was in the air doing her own rendition of cirque du soleil! I was so impressed! I think everyone was mesmerized.

Obviously, media plays a HUGE part in the Grammy's. First, it's aired globally on T.V. and second, you can watch it online on YouTube and on the Grammy's web-site! The Grammy's is a huge media experience, and also fits into the Eight Shifts we learned about in class, including: Personal Shift - I'm posting the video on my blog and Facebook and Aesthetic Shift, because we can watch any Grammy performance just by whipping out our Smartphones.

Pink's performance got me thinking about a lot of others things that we learned in my Electronic Media & Writing class. First, her performance was very entertaining for all three parts of the brain: Reptilian - she was wearing a barely there outfit which relates to sex appeal (sex), and survival - the audience wondering, is she going to fall?! Limbic: Music and images - her performance in the air was visually stunning! Also, Neocortex - The 30 frames per second getting processed into our brain, and thinking "what will Pink do next?" Second, her performance got me thinking about the Seven Basic Principles of Media Education. The production techniques of Pink's performance (not the mention the entire Grammy's) were very nice on the eyes. The camera angle and lighting were just two things I noticed. The lights were set low to create a soothing mood, and the camera angles captured every defining moment of her performance.

I wonder what the 2011 Grammy's will bring us?

You can check out more from the Grammy's here

Now you may (or may not) be wondering why I posted this. In my Electronic Media & Writing class my professor selected a banned SuperBowl ad to show in class. We watched it several times, took it apart, and analyzed it to the core. It was our first time analyzing a script and it's different scenes.

This ad was banned from the SuperBowl... But Why? Anyone have any ideas? Maybe we can find out at GoDaddy

President Obama's State of the Union Address

On January 27, 2010 President Obama gave another articulate, heartwarming, and reassuring speech to The United States of America. For my Electronic Media & Writing course we viewed the first ten minutes and then we were instructed to analyze what we got a chance to watch. Please take a moment to look at one of his most powerful speeches.

Thesis
The United States of America has struggled through lost jobs, deployment, and college debt, we have started to make changes and continue to make changes in order to be a stronger nation.

Facts
1-in-10 Americans are still struggling to find jobs.
Unemployment may have doubled in size if Obama didn't take the actions that he did.
65% of Americans now have more affordable healthcare.
25% of Americans who are new homebuyers, college students, received tax-cuts

Brain
Neocortex: We listen and hear the powerful words that Obama says to his country. We then process and analyze the words. Obama definitely gave us a lot to think about.

Limbic: Obama addressed how many jobs were lost, and how it is very difficult for most people to find a way to pay for college. These real issues trigger emotions for millions of Americans.

Reptilian: We need jobs and money in order to survive.

7 Principles
Production Techniques: The camera captures different emotions by switching to Obama, and then to the crowd.

Emotional Transfer: Obama discussing the war, lost jobs, and Americans not having enough money to pay for college.

Value Message: Every words that Obama spoke were valuable to everyone in America.

Individual Meaning: Some Americans could relate to the war, others could relate to the struggle of paying for college, and others could relate to the war.

8 Trends
Technological: The speech can now be found on YouTube and other popular websites on the World Wide Web.

Aesthetic Shift: We have the ability to watch the speech on our iPhones and iTouch.

Cultural Shift: Obama addresses moving forward as a nation.

29 Persuasive Techniques
Symbols: The American Flag behind Obama, as well as the patriotic ties and pins both Obama and Biden wear.

Group Dynamics: Addressing the audience as "Fellow Americans."

Humor: Obama compares the bailout to a root-canal.

Testimonial: A stimulus check for plain folks.

Plain Folks: Real American stories. (Lost jobs, struggle to pay for college, etc.)

Nostalgia: Reflecting back on past wars.

Warm Fuzzies: Obama discussing children.

Scientific Evidence: He added statistics to support his speech.

Maybe: Obama said that unemployment may have doubled in size if he didn't take action and issue a bailout.

The End.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!
I hope you enjoyed my blog on Obama's most recent speech!
